Question about new computer.

I know I probely brought this up somewhere else I think but recently I found an old iPod nano that my niece once had think it's about 8 years old now. But I wanted to experiment and connect it with my computer. There was an error message that said this iPod was synced with another computer and... I forget the exact words but basically it said it needed to be formatted to synce with my iTunes/computer. This tells me whenever I do have to get a new computer, I might have to do the same with my iPod classic. Is this true?
