Synching

Would someone please confirm/correct my understanding of what goes on when I plug my iPad into my pc and call up iTunes? Do all the Podcasts and music I previously had downloaded to my pc automatically get transferred to my iPad? Is that what synching means, or is there more to the term? Thanks. ...wdc
