Ipod 5.5 new HD won't work.

Hello everyone. Sorry in advance for the long post, but i'm stumped. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have an Ipod 5.5 generation. Before switching hard drives, it would turn on and work, but it would make a clicking sound inside the casing after about a minute, get really hot, and start to freeze up. Took it to a store, guy said it was a bad hard drive. I wanted to make sure i pursued every avenue before taking the plunge and opening it up. It would not recognize in iTunes, so i tried to reformat it from the computer. It started but froze up so i clicked out of it. After that, it would show the apple logo, then shut off, then apple logo again in a loop until the battery died. I figured i had just wiped the bad hard drive and ordered a new one.

I opened up the case and removed the hard drive about 4 days ago. Left it open until today when the new hard drive came and i installed it. When i turn it on, sad face. I figure i need to either restore or reformat the new HD. However, it won't recognize it in either iTunes or Computer. When i plug it into USB or wall charger, it will cycle from apple logo, to sad face, to the "Please wait, very low battery" screens. It isn't able to go into either Diagnostic or Disk mode, i can reset it but it's doing that on it's own anyway.

I'm starting to think perhaps the failed reformat did something to the logic board. Does a reformat affect the logic board?

Anyone know what to do?
