itunes on external drive?

Is it possible to run itunes from an external drive? The reason I ask is that my wife's imac is getting full up with music. Alternatively, can I remove the music from the imac and leave it on an ipod? If I do this and sync the ipod what would happen?

Sorry if this sounds garbled but I am really confused by itunes.
