Battery install problem

I just installed a new battery in a nano 3rd gen. It was successful in that the device works, but it will not take a charge or sync with my computer. Any ideas of what would be causing the problem? Oh, another piece of information– when plugged into an ipod dock on a stereo it does respond to the external devices' play/pause button.
