So I just bought an ipod on eBay (okay I know) 4th generation, 20gb, pre photo pre video. No color.
Anyways, when I plug it in nothing happens for the most part. I have the most up to date iTunes that I can get which is 9.2 I think. I have a 4g PowerBook. I really love the mid 00's apple products you see... But the ipod will also not connect to a newer Dell computer with up to date iTunes either. Ipod will charge with FireWire and it will charge on USB after resetting, but will not connect to computers in any way outside of charging. Tried different cables, reinstalling iTunes fully... Reset, restart computer. All the stuff after searching online for hours.
If I put ipod in disc mode while connected to computer it goes to 'do not disconnect' for about 1 second and then to 'okay to disconnect' immediately. This doesn't get the ipod to sync with the computer but afterwards the ipod will be charging with the USB. Again, ipod always charges with FireWire but only after resetting USB. But WILL NOT show up as a disc on any computer...
It needs to be said the ipod is entirely in working order. A lot of music is on the ipod and it all plays perfectly.
I suspect there is a charging connector and a sync connection. Could the sync connection be bad or should I try something else. I have several broken iPods of the same type I could do some amateur repairs with, but wouldn't know where to start

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN TRY?
One other thing disc mode, 5 in 1 says 'USB PASS'
