Lost iTunes Playlists

I recently had a crash and had to reinstall iTunes on my 64 bit Windows 7 desktop computer. The old iTunes playlists remain on the hard disk, but when I connect my iPod to the computer, I get a message that: "your playlists were created using an older version of iTunes" and are not accessible.

My iPod Mini is fully functional and has my music library as well as all playlists intact.

What can I do?
