Digital output volume iPod touch 2g

I am running an iPod touch 2g though a pure i20 dock and external DAC. Using the coax output, the volume is very quiet, much quieter than other digital sources (PC, Iriver h120). I've yet to try optical, but I can't see how that would differ. As it's pure digital information were dealing with here, how could this possibly happen? An iPod classic seems to produce louder digital audio through the dock. It makes no sense.
