Verizon glass screen protector for iPhone 5s

I purchased an iPhone 5s from Verizon the other day; the salesperson suggested a screen protector made of glass and packaged under their own label. I was told that as the screen of iPhones tend to be vulnerable to damage that the glass protector preferentially will shatter before the glass screen. It sounded a bit bogus, but I am interested to discover whatever information may be available.
