I thought that I would start a new thread because this appears to be a unique situation and I am looking for help.
I finally replaced my XP desktop with a new Win 8 machine. I had 4 iTunes accounts on the XP machine for each of our family members. The media files (music files) are all on a separate server and therefore the media files were not moved. The iTunes library files (data files) for each of the accounts were on the old XP machine (in other words, the iTunes library files were NOT on the server with the media files). My goal was to transfer all 4 of the iTunes accounts and the libraries over to the new Win 8 machine and have all of the accounts point to the corresponding media files on the server. I may have screwed it up however, and I am looking for some help.
First off, I didnt copy the iTunes library (data files) from the old XP machine (which may have been a mistake). I also should mention that I use Music Match so all of the music on my account (only one of the 4) are in the cloud. So here is what I did and what happened.
1. Upon setting up the new computer I downloaded iTunes which apparently set up a new library on the new computer (at this point only for my account).
2. I logged into my account
3. It looked like all of my music and playlists appeared.
4. In "Preferences", I changed the path for the iTunes Media Folder location to the file on the server.
5. However, all of my songs have the symbol of a cloud with a downward arrow in it.
6. When I click "get info" for the song, they say the location is "On the Cloud."
7. I downloaded one of the songs by clicking the above symbol and it made a copy of the song onto my Media Folder on the server so now there are two copies of the song.
What did I do wrong? Is there a way to point iTunes library to the Media Folder on the server so that the library gets populated with music from the server? Or will I have to download all of the music from the cloud and then delete each duplicate? That would be pretty onerous.
Also, I have not attempted to set up the other 3 accounts and none of that music is on Music Match so not on the cloud. Will I be able to point those libraries on those accounts to the respective Media Files on the server?
Hopefully that explains my problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
