Odd email issue

My iPad is one of the original versions, without camera. It has been working perfectly but suddenly developed this problem. ---- I send myself an email message from the iPad. The message appears in the Sent folder. I receive it on my desktop PC. But it does not show up on my iPad in the Incoming folder.

And, in fact, none of the mail sent to my email address in the last two days has appeared in the Incoming folder.

It is as if my incoming folder is "filled" and is not accepting new messages. Is there an easy way to mass-delete large blocks of un-needed old messages in my Incoming folder?
