Created new iTunes ID; content merged w/ old ID?

New here; TIA for any assistance.

I created a new iTunes ID for my child so that he could have his own iTunes library. However, now when I log into iTunes under my old ID, the only content I have is the same as my son's. Everything else is GONE. When I plugged in my iPad and attempted to sync it, I got a message that the iPad was connected to a different account on the same computer. But I was logged in under the same ID I've had for years. It would appear that my ID and my son's ID are one and the same account now. Have I screwed up completely? Is there any way to recover my old account info? If not, there's no way I can sync my other devices without deleting everything on them, right? Augh!!!
