how to backup ipod classic 160gb new hard drive

I was wondering i am getting a new hard drive and dont want to loose all my ipod music that i have downloaded from the net when i have tried to back up in the past the songs came out line hjkg,mp3 in letter form so i was wondering how do i back up my ipod classic 160gb the right way.
