Traveling from Canada to Hawaii

We are on Telus I am looking for anyone with experience swapping out their sim cards for use in Hawaii (couple of iPhone 5's). The Telus travel packs I don't think are the answer for us but am trying to look at all options and go from there. Ideally if I went the sim card route I'd like to be able to set it on the shelf for awhile and top it up again if I visited one of the western continental states as well.
