iPad2 cannot connect to iTunes

I backup my iPad2 to my laptop.

Today when I connect to my laptop I get message saying that

"the iPad could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and re-connect the iPad, then try again"



I tried this a number of time and tried different cables. It will not charge from the laptop once that message is shown but does charge from the mains.



Help!

As always, I need the laptop next week.

PS Can I find out from the iPad when I bought or started using it?
