"on this phone" in Itunes

Hi there, sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I went to update my phone for the first time in ages today and the "on this phone" tab is nowhere to be seen? which means I have no access to my library through Itunes at all?! is there something painfully obvious that im missing?
