I just updated iTunes but now my iPod won't connect

I guess my iPod is too out of date. It won't show up on I tunes but just on the computer itself. The iPod shows it's connected but the iTunes ignores it. I tried this several time the first couple times when connected the iPod to my computer nothing happened even the showdown an empty battery icon where nothing was plugged in and the 3rd time just the computer would recognize it and the pod would show that it's connected. But iTunes itself would never recognize my iPod.
