iTunes removes ratings

I've been using iTunes since the 1st gen Nano. I have a 5th gen since it came out and one really really annoying thing of late is iTunes will remove the ratings from my content.

I rarely listen to music. Just spoken word. I'll have anywhere from 10 to 50 of these files on my Nano and rate them a 5 if I'm in the middle of listening to one and a 1 when I'm finished listening to it. Rating it a 1 lets me easily and quickly find the ones that are done and they get deleted. I upgraded iTunes this morning and when I plugged in my Nano the ratings were gone. Now I can find the files that I have listened to and the one that I'm currently listening to but it just takes a lot longer. This seems to be happening a lot more lately when iTunes upgrades. On the last upgrade what I would do is start iTunes first then plug in my Nano. That way the ratings stayed.

This is really a pain in the butt. I know apple uses an itl and a xml database files. I'm using Win7. Why do the ratings in these files not get transferred to the new itl file when iTunes is upgraded? I've noticed this time that after I unplug the Nano the ratings are still on the files it should be on but still doesn't show up in iTunes. Sort of pointless since the reason of the ratings is to use then while in iTunes.

Anyone got any answers?
