Why Flac?

Why do people choose flac for their lossless audio archiving/library? A lot of people, probably most, have iTunes and some kind of iPhone/iPod/iPad which flac are not compatible with. Alac can always be changed back to another lossless format at a future date if apple go under, so futureproofing isnt really an issue. Flac has all the same or similar tagging features as Alac from what I can see, it just plays on less. A lot of software and hardware today is capable of playing back alac or m4a files but not flac, so when people say flac is more universal or open or more compatible I just dont see it. Why isn't everyone using apple lossless m4a's for their lossless audio...am I missing something?
