iPod Touch won't connect to iTunes

Hello everybody,

So my brother just lovingly passed down to me a 4th Gen iPod Touch 32GB, and since my iPhone 4 only has 8GB I was thrilled to be able to put my entire library onto one device. However, I reset the iPod, and upon connecting it to iTunes as the onscreen image of a connector and iTunes logo insists, it does nothing. On the top right is a button that says 'iPod' but when I click it, all I get is a blank white screen with the word 'iPod' in the middle, to the top right a button that says 'done,' and to the top left an option to eject the iPod. I have no idea what to do; I remember with past iPods that this button would bring me to a menu where I could set up and initialize the iPod, but with this iPod nothing is happening.

It may be tied to an issue where my iTunes absolutely refuses to connect to the internet in any way shape or form; even though the rest of my computer is fine, iTunes can't connect to the store and whenever I plug in my iPhone it gives me a message like "itunes could not load data from sync services" or something along the lines of that. I can't imagine why this would impact my being able to set up an iPod touch, but may be useful nontheless.

I'm running the most recent version of iTunes (updated it today, didn't fix the issue). Please help me out, guys...
