Hello all...I can't figure this out for the life of me so I'm hoping the fine folks here with more experience can help me out.......
BACKGROUND & PROBLEM I have a 12000-song iTunes library which used to reside until a week ago on my Hewlett Packard PC with Windows XP. I have since backed up the library on a Seagate Back-Up Plus external hard drive.
This past weekend I purchased and set up a new Hewlett Packard PC now with Windows 8. I downloaded iTunes onto the new computer, hooked up the Seagate drive and used the "Choose Library" feature to run and manage my library as it exists on the external Seagate drive. So far, so good...or so i thought!!
The iTunes Libary now shows double the number of songs that are actually in the library. Every song on every album is duplicated...not the albums duplicated, just all the songs on each album (they appear under their albums twice). Instead of showing 12000-plus songs, the bottom status bar is showing 24000+ songs. And double the size of the library, i.e. the album should actually be 98GB but the status bar reads 186GB.
I'm afraid to sync my iPod Classic for fear that I will end up with double the songs on it.
I believe I may have done something wrong when I backed up the library to the Seagate external drive which duplicated the files somehow.
I'm trying to diagnose what has happened & thus be able to determine the best course to correct the problem. This is where yours truly is seeking help from the more experienced folks here who follow this forum, who undoubtedly know more about the iTunes program than I do.
Please by all means, ask me questions so that I will be able to help you understand the problem and, thus, you will be able to help me figure it all out so that I might be able to fix whatever has gone haywire.
