ipod not showing on PC

ipod was appearing in itunes; today it won't show up. I uninst/intall itunes x3 on PC, ipod still won't show up. (Using Windows 7.) Apple Mobile Device Support is running.

Is there are itunes setting for "automatically start ipod"?

Before clicking Finish connect the ipod (to install driver)?

What has to be running in Startup?

Does itunehelper have to be running to identify ipod? At startup?

Even tried this -

"I had to completely remove iTunes and all of its components and re-install iTunes in compatibility mode in order to get my iPod Touch to work.

Once you are ready to install iTunes, you need to right click on the .exe file, go to properties and change compatibility to XP or Vista."

and:

When you connected your iPod, open iTunes and wait until the iPod appears in the source list. (I prefer to open iTunes first and connect my iPods.) Then right click on the iPod icon and check the options. There is one called "Automatically open iTunes when connecting iPod".
