iPod 5th gen (video) has a mind of its own

My partner dug this out for to have a look at after I rebuilt her laptop for her (new motherboard), I should have failed at that to ensure she did not find me something else to have a look at :) . As found the iPod was totally dead, so I ordered a new battery and fitted it, it the powered up OK and after a bit of playing it was put to one side as we had other things to attend to. It then started to exhibit some rather peculiar behaviour. When turned off you would hear the internal disc drive suddenly start up then stop, sometimes the display would light up and it would start up, other times it would dimly display and insufficient battery power message and keep going through the brief drive activity and short period of display routine. Once it started to do this you could not get it to work properly again. However, if the battery was disconnected and then reconnected the whole game would start all over again; it would work properly for a while, then when turned off and put to one side the phantom turning itself on game would re-start etc. I did strip it to see if the switches were playing silly so and so's with me (this is how I discovered disconnecting the battery seemed to reset it for a very short time), but this did not help.

So the question is chaps, any suggestions as to how to cure this one?

Regards

Ian
