Music gone from Ipod but when connected to ITunes still shows up on Ipod

I have an Ipod Touch 4th Gen and am using Itunes 12.1.1.4 and Windows Vista. Just a few days ago I discovered all of my playlists and most of my content missing from Itunes on my Ipod. When my Ipod is connected to Itunes all of the content is still showing up as on my device. Help! Is the content still there and I just can't access it? Thanks for any advice.
