GMC Intellilink & iphone 6 w/ 9.3.2

I don't know if any of you are familiar with the GMC intellilink integration or not.
2016 GMC Canyon. Truck has Carplay, which you need to be plugged directly into the truck via cable to utilize Carplay.

I'm referring to Bluetooth, voice/hands free, Siri and sending texts.

My phone will usually always be in my pocket (hence, hands free). It's paired to the truck perfectly. I will use the hands-free voice to send a text.
In this truck, if you press the voice button once, you get the vehicle prompts. If you press & hold the button for 2-3 seconds, you get SIRI.

I'll say, "Text John Doe". Siri comes back and says, "You need to unlock your iphone first". This is somewhat annoying. If I wait 3 more seconds and press the button again....she'll work and allow me to send a text.

I've gone thru just about every setting I can think of and nothing works. SIRI is enabled when the phone is locked - and if you do the exact same thing on the phone directly, she'll send a text without unlocking the phone.

It's also really really weird.....If I summon Siri in the truck via hands free and ask her for directions to...."John Doe's Pub" - She'll come out and say something like...."I can't search google while you're driving" -Or- "I can't perform that function while you're in the car.

What's up with that? That's the whole point of having hands free - so you don't have to peck at the phone while driving. But even SIRI won't do this while you're driving.

Is this an 'Apple issue' or some sort of 'safety' on Apples behalf? Or is this a GMC safety issue built into their programming?
