ipod classic 160GB troubles

Hello everyone , I am new to iLounge and this is my first post . I have an ipod classic 160GB . It has never given me a problem until now. I added a few new cd's to my itunes library and hooked up the ipod to sync it . I get a pop up message that all can't fit and I have to delete some songs . I deleted more that enough songs so I can fit 2 new cd's on it . I hook up my ipod again in order to sync it . I got the same message so I disconnected the ipod again , deleted more songs and went to hook up the ipod again when I noticed all my songs were wiped of the ipod . Over 17,000 songs gone . I dont know how this happened . The ipod is now empty , I hook it up to sync it and it still says theres not enough room ??? I have never had problems like this , how do I correct this ? Thanks in advance for the assistance .
