IPhone is stuck on settings screen and home button and power button do not work; can't turn off phone or go to home page.

Hoping everyone can help or point me in the right direction. My wife and I just got our first Iphones (5) last week. Been planning on upgrading for over a year and waited for cell phone contract.
Anyway, I was using phone a few hours ago and adding several podcasts to my phone/podcasts app. Then it just froze up!
IPhone is stuck on settings screen and home button and power button do not work; can't turn off phone or go to home page.
it is stuck on the settings screen and the touch screen works and everything, however the power button and the home button will not work and i cannot turn my iphone off or go back to the home page. but when i hold the home button, siri still works but i am still stuck on the settings page. assistive touch did not work, and i think the problem is that it is just literally stuck on the settings screen, but not frozen. (i can still press general, accessibility and all that, so touch screen works, but cant go on home page) and my home and power buttons "work" i guess, but because its stuck on the settings screen the phone wont shut off or go to the home page. i hope that wasnt too confusing. please help!!!!
So what I did, was connect phone to computer and it synced with Itunes and had me enter my ICloud info (this was my first time doing this).
After a few hours of reading blogs and other help sites, it seems I had to restore settings. So i did. Now Itunes/phone is downloading something and says it will take 5 hours.
I will admit i am very lost. I was set in my ways on the Ipod classic LOL
If I can't get this resolved I will be taking it back to Verizon tomorrow.
Any advice?
