iTunes not detecting iPod on first try

Got a new computer recently and every time I go to plug in my iPod it doesn't detect it on the first try. It will if I unplug and plug it back in but would love to fix it so I don't have to do this every time. Also gives me an error message the second time and asks me if I want to scan and fix a drive as well when plugging back in. Is this an issue on my end or is it an issue on iTunes end? Thanks for any help.
