Setup: Windows 7, Outlook 2003, latest iTunes and iOS updates, iPhone 5
I perform regular manual backups of iPhone in addition to choosing "Automatically Back Up" (to) "This Computer". I only use iCloud for Find My iPhone feature, no backups.
I am in the process of getting pc ready for major backups to external hard drives.
Seeking help/advice/input with the questions below, please.......
Missing notes and possibly contacts: I wanted to backup my notes and contacts on my iPhone to Outlook because I wanted another copy of them directly on the PC, not sure why but notes were deleted from the iPhone, not sure about contacts at this point, have not yet compared... and though the iPhone had 43 notes, there were only 18 showing up in Outlook and on the iPhone. My main concern was getting the notes back since I did not have a backup of them. (I have only ever used Outlook for notes and contacts when I had a Blackberry, never setup an email for it).
Luckily yesterday I had made backup copies of:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer which includes the MobileSync (iPhone backup)
After what I thought was a successful sync with Outlook, I again made an iPhone backup, and again made copies of the above 2 folders as backup this morning. I did not notice my missing notes until later this afternoon..
I guess from what I am reading Outlook sync is buggy? Is there another way to export notes from the iPhone to a PC and save them possibly in text files?
Restore Backup/Find my iPhone issues iTunes told me that I could not restore backup because I had to turn off Find my iPhone first. This option on the iPhone was greyed out, it was stuck "on".
I followed the directions for "Remove an iOS device or Mac on which you cant turn off Find My iPhone" in this article:
iCloud: Remove your device from Find My iPhone but of course whenever the iPhone came back on and connected to the internet I still could not turn off Find my iPhone. I was baffled. The other solution listed there is to erase the device which I was too nervous about doing. Somehow after reading this article:
iCloud: Change iCloud feature settings I figured I would delete my iCloud account and see if that would let me proceed. It did and I wish it had stated so in the first article.
What if in the future I do want to use iCloud to backup my notes, contacts, reminders? Would this have been more than a catch 22 than it seems to be? I would be deleting my back up....
Restoring from older backups? I have never had to restore my iPhone before today. I was surprised to see I could not find any older backups to choose from even though I had diligently made manual backups. A shocking wake up call.
Is there a way to have iTunes see more than the recent backup? I read something about tricking iTunes by using different device names...how does that work? Or does anyone else have a better method? I did right click on my device in the source window and chose "Restore from Backup", but only saw my most recent backup.
How does user pricewc in this thread at apple discussions have all those backups listed (see image in middle of page)? Is that because they were named with the timestamps?
http://ift.tt/Os9rHfSince I could not find an older back up via iTunes. I went into the MobileSync/Backup folder, deleted everything that was there (I had a back up of this). And then I pasted yesterday's version of the contents of that folder there. I tried to restore from backup again but I was met with the message: "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "xxxx's iPhone" because not enough free space is available on the iPhone." So I restored the iPhone to new (via iTunes), and then was able to restore from yesterday's backup All seems to be OK.
As I had made some changes to the notes since yesterday, I was really hoping to restore to an earlier backup that I made early this morning before the Outlook sync, but I could not locate that backup time via iTunes. It only shows me one choice. Though I see multiple files in that MobileSync/Backup folder that point to the desired time.
Is there anyway I can restore a specific backup time that I remember? So every time that I make a manual backup of the iPhone, I should also manually back up the MobileSync folder? As well as change my device name every time? One last question, on the PC, to make manual backups of photos and videos made on the iPhone, do I just copy and paste from Computer\xxxxs iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM? Is this the best way to do that?
