I'm posting to see if anyone is having the same issue as me. I have soundcheck in iTunes enabled. I then replace the values iTunes calculated with ReplayGain values calculated by iVolume (I don't actually do it, the program does). Everything is fine for the majority of songs in my iTunes library.
However, there are some specific albums where iTunes will ignore the soundcheck values and just play the songs very quietly. It will even ignore the soundcheck numbers that it calculates. There are about 3-4 albums (all from different artists) in my iTunes library that do this and it's annoying as they are some of my favorites.
I can edit the track tag information of the songs individually and iTunes will play them back fine just once. After that, it plays them quietly again. It's very annoying that iTunes is doing this. Neither my iPhone 5 or iPad mini have this issue as they playback the songs at the appropriate volumes (both have soundcheck enabled).
I can disable soundcheck in iTunes and it will play the songs back at a much louder volume, it's not the volume calculated by iVolumes but it's almost twice as loud as when soundcheck is enabled. I checked the soundcheck values and those aren't the issue. I adjusted one album to be +20dB (which should just be distorted noise) and iTunes played it back at the same quiet volume.
This is all under OS X Mavericks with the latest version of iTunes (and all appropriate OS X updates). This is a problem that has showed up back in Lion and has come up continually with the same few albums. Then again, I never fully re-install OS X whenever I upgrade as there is no need to (and I can't since I have too many virtual machines that I would have to rebuild along with re-installing over 50 programs and getting those up and running, something that would all take a month to do).
