Ipod Nano isnt recognized by Itunes

I have a iPod nano 5th generation and every time that I plug it into the USB chord connected to my Windows 8 computer, it connects and then un-connects itself off of iTunes and the message "an iPod has been detected, but it cannot be properly identified" shows up. Please help I don't know what to do :o
