Itunes disaster!!

OK OK, i knmow i am not too popular here. but i am desperate. this all started when itunes prompted me to update to a newer version. the update froze un and failed and my itunes would not work. i had to start over and reinstall...on several tries. all my playlists got erased, at least my music is back. to make a long story short... i am afraid to plug in my ipod classic. My itunes has been dong starnge stuff. after i got all my playlists back a few days later... my itunes library dissapeared because my computer froze up and i had to go to emeergenct shut down. turn my com back on (theres a chcdsk issue too but differant topic) my library dissapeared so guess what i had to do the playlist thing all over again. after all this trouble. i have not yet pluged in my ipod classic and to be honest i am afraid to. i went to google to look some of this stiff up, i think i saw a dialouge where you could keep the music you alreadt have in there and add more from the new itunes library. because i tell you, to be honest, i'm afraid if the take the music out and put it back in again again something will be corrupted. someone help, plaese!:(:(:(
