Relative quality of DAC?

My wife has an iPod Nano 3rd Generation that she likes the sound of, even more so now that we bought a couple of TracFone android models. The audio quality of the android phones is, well, crappy.

I suspect that devices that do almost "everything" (like the iPod Touch) may sacrifice some audio quality to, say, an iPod Classic that mostly only provides audio. I've been to this web site to review various iPod specs:

everymac(dot)com/systems/apple/ipod/index-ipod-specs (sorry... I'm not allowed to post a link....)

Apparently, iPods don't have a dedicated DAC, probably using the processor to accomplish that task. So, all I can glean from these specs is that both the iPod Nano and the iPod Classic have the same processor -- Samsung ARM. The iPod Touch has the processor identification as: "1 (2 cores)"

Well, that doesn't tell me anything. If I were to upgrade from the Nano AND audio quality was my primary concern (playing AAC), which would provide the better audio -- the iPod Classic or the Touch (64 GB)? (I realize that the iPod Classic would simply be an upgrade in memory, and not necessarily audio quality.)

I think it would be nearly impossible for me to load familiar music into each of these at a store to sample. (It they accepted memory cards then that would be another story. All replies --objective or subjective opinions -- welcome. Thanks.
