Syncing music to original (click wheel) iPod.

I've seen a couple of posts saying iTunes is extremely backwards compatible?



Is that still the case or are there any other music apps that can sync music across to the very first iPod?



Mine doesn't show in iTunes or as a drive within osx itself? The FireWire connection is a bit dodgy but it still shows as charging and 'OK to disconnect'.
