Ipod Touch to DSL wired modem?

Hi All, I have DSL with a wireless modem. Everything works fine upstairs, but my roommate complains a lot that her iPod won't work well downstairs in the opposite part of the house. It's not feasible to move everything downstairs so I was wondering how to get the signal to work better in that part of the house. I have an old wired DSL Gateway that I was thinking about trying to hook up for her, but I don't know if that would work as a "repeater" or not. Can I hook the iPod Touch 4th generation directly to this other router/modem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
