How to upload customizable lists to different devices?

I have several devices including an iphone an ipad and ipod touch.

Is there any way itunes can be configured to sync different files to each of the different devices. Im aware you can check the files you want to sync, but is there a way in which itunes can recognize each device and know what files to upload to each automatically without having to check off each file you want to upload onto the device?
