Playlists

I recall years ago concluding playlists on iPads were whacked. Is this still the case or am I doing it wrong? A playlist I have with rules "comments contains" and "not played in the last 3 days" shows with the correct songs when looking in iTunes with ipad connected, disconnect it and only 60% of the songs are in the playlist.
