Am I missing something??

I have 2 Iphones and an Ipad. My storage on all 3 devices are almost full so I decided to delete some music. I have since paid for ITunes match. I thought this would have stopped the memory on my Iphones being used but when I sync my memory gets full. How do I use ITunes match without using my phones storage??
