How to "start over" but keep some app data?

Hi there.

So, I have this problem. 9.75 GB on my iPhone (edit: 4S, still running iOS 6 but i'll want to update after this is sorted out) is taken by some mysterious "Other" data. It really should not be that much. I've tried all the solutions posted online, I've even went to see some geniuses who couldn't solve it either. I was told my only options were a) put up with having almost 10GB less storage or b) set it up as a new phone.

Well, I've been putting up with it for a while, and I'm sick of it. I paid for a 32GB iPhone, not a 22GB iPhone. It seems like it should be enough, but I have lots of apps and photos and it adds up.

So, if you have a solution to get rid of this "Other" data.. or at least find out what the heck it even is, please let me know.

But I've pretty much given up hope on that. Now I just want to start fresh. I'm just wondering what problems that entails and how I can keep as much of my data as I can and how do I even go about it?

My guess would be;

- control-click on iphone in itunes, select backup.

- make sure all photos in the camera roll have been transferred (anything synched via iPhoto or from a shared stream is safe anyway, riiight?)

- all apps that require a login (dropbox, tumblr, twitter) etc are gonna be fine anyway. And so is 1password since I have the same stuff on the desktop app.

- my contacts synch over icloud so that should be fine too

- then I'd need to hit "restore iPhone".... and what happens then? It'll offer to set it up as new..? And then I just re-download the apps I want and arrange them how I want.. ?

There comes the doozy though. I have some apps that store data that I'd reaaaaally like to keep. I have a weight tracker that i've been using for years for instance. Sure you can export as a text file but that would mean re-entering hundreds of data points. I have an age-tracker app where I've stored a lot of things (not just people but anniversaries and so on).. I have gps tracker (hmm I like tracking things) that has some old paths in it that have sentimental value.

progress in games is gonna be a bummer too.

The more I think about it, the more keeping those 9GB of dead space for ever and ever seems appealing.. especially since I don't know what caused or IS causing the "Other" space to grow slowly.. maybe it'll just keep happening?

this is so frustrating :( maybe there is a way to keep app data without having to spend a weekend re-entering stuff.. or transfer it unharmed...? Help Please.. :o
