Updating to iOS 6.13 from 6.01, answers needed - please..!!

Hello guys, it's been a long time since I posted in here, but, I still visit every now and then. Ok, to business...

I've had an iPod Touch 5 32GB running iOS 6.01 for about 2 months now. Like all other iPods I have, or have had, I mainly use it to only to play music and video's. Just lately though I have been seeing lots of other apps and even games that can be installed on it. After googling I also see there are lots of later iOS's available - 6.12, 6.13, 7.xx beta etc etc. I am now wondering if I can update to maybe 6.12 or 6.13 easily. Is it even legal to do so? I see the downloads of these updated versions of iOS on a handful of sites, but, each time I wonder which to download, I keep seeing them in reference to "jailbreaking", and the iOS files are huge, usually around 900mb or more. I don't know how you guys feel about this jailbreaking thing. I'd only heard of it but never entertained the idea of actually doing it, although the extra possibilities, once done, seem quite a bit better from an owners point of view, so maybe one day I might think about it,, just not right now...

Anyway - Questions...

1. Is it leagal to download and/or install and use any of these updated iOS's?

2. Can you update only, that is, to update but not jailbreak or are these updates a prelude to jailbreaking only?

3. Depending on the above, how do you do it?

I'm sure I watched a video which showed this update method being done through iTunes,, something to do with the restore button then browsing to one of the updates and letting iTunes "do it",, but I could be wrong...

Can any of you help me here..?? Thanks...

Oh, (edit in)... Can you tell me how to update, if legal please??
