What good is the "slide to unlock" feature?

I find the "slide to unlock" feature annoying. Does it have any useful purpose?



I see that there are ways to disable it. What is the risk of doing that? If there is no good reason to have it, I'd love to get rid of it.



Is there one way to disable it that is better than the others?
